THE MANLIUS LIBRARY
POLICY ON PUBLIC USE OF THE INTERNET
As part of its commitment to provide public access to information, the Manlius Library offers access to the Internet. While the Internet can be a valuable source of local, national and international information which expands the scope of resources available to our users, it is an unregulated medium that changes constantly and unpredictably. Information found on the Internet may be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated or offensive to some individuals.
The Manlius Library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and assumes responsibility only for the information provided on its home pages. Library patrons use Internet resources at their own risk and discretion.
Access by Children
The Library provides Internet access equally to all library users. Only parents or guardians - not the Library or its staff - may restrict their children from access to Internet or other library materials. The library staff may restrict use because of excessive and/or inappropriate behavior. We advise parents to monitor and supervise their children's Internet use and to inform them about materials they should and should not use. For more information on children and the Internet see "A Safety Net For the Internet: A Parent's Guide" published by the American Library Association.
Security
Users are cautioned that the Internet is not a secure medium, and all transactions, files and communications may be subject to unauthorized access by third parties.
Rules for Use
Use of public access Internet workstations requires respect for the rights of others. Please observe the following rules when using the Internet at the Manlius Library:
- Use of the Internet for activities that violate local, state or federal laws is prohibited.
- It is the responsibility of all users of electronic resources to respect intellectual property rights. Responsibility for any consequences of copyright infringement lies with the user; the Library expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility resulting from such use.
- Users are reminded that the Library's computers are located in public areas which are shared with Library users and staff of all ages, backgrounds and sensibilities. Individuals are expected to respect the sensibilities of others when accessing potentially offensive information or images.
- Any attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Library's computer systems or to alter or damage software or computer equipment is prohibited. Internet workstations are to be used only for access to the Internet and online databases. Permission for any other use must be obtained from a staff member.
Use of the Manlius Library Internet is a privilege, not a right. Violation of the Rules of Use or other inappropriate use will result in cancellation of this privilege.
